Spa Girl loves having a Massage @ Home

Edouard Debat-Ponson, 1883 Le massage huile sur toile 1883
Musée des Augustins Toulouse

For the last year I have been working with a massage therapist who comes to my house for massage work which I love. It is so relaxing as I don't have to jump in and out of the car, deal with traffic or parking and when I'm done I can stretch out and enjoy the benefits of the work we have done. There are only a few massage therapist willing to do home visits, but I highly recommend them in-between those fabulous Spa get-a-ways.

For a long time I would just have a full body massage and that was it, now with some experience and confidence behind me I know to ask for work on specific areas like my feet, hands, chin and eyebrows which really helps eliminate built up stress. You would be surprised to know just how many muscles there are in the eyebrows and how fabulous it feels to work on this area. Today we also worked on my forearms which are tender from all the computer work I've done since returning from my fabulous Christmas break. Working with someone who knows your body is ideal, as they can determine subtle changes from one massage to another and keep on top of problem areas.

My massage therapist works on both the superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue utilizing her hands, fingers, elbows, and forearm to stretch, knead and promote overall relaxation. She adjusts her overall pressure to meet my own comfort zone sometimes applying a lot of pressure, while other areas, which are more tender, are treated very delicately. Massage should not hurt!

Selecting what type of massage work you want is much more difficult; Wikipedia states there are over 80 different massage modalities! Spa Girls recommendation: Ask your favorite Spa expert what massage work they offer and discuss your desired outcomes to find the best type of massage to consider, and don't be afraid to try something new once in awhile.

In most cases massage work is done without any clothe,s but don't panic, you are completely covered up and only areas being worked on are exposed. If you are not comfortable completely undressing, by all means leave on your undies. But remember, your butt has some of the biggest muscles in your body, and it shouldn't be neglected when having massage work done.

Another choice you need to consider in professional settings is the position you like to be in while having a massage as there are a variety of choices: on a massage table, sitting or kneeling on a massage chair, or lying on a mat on the floor. I think people generally fall into two categories, you are either a recliner or a sitter upper, I am definitely a recliner, so I love to have my massage work done on a wide comfortable massage table and preferably one that is heated.

For general well-being having a massage two times a month is ideal, if however you have problem areas your massage therapist will establish a more rigorous routine.

Spa Girl asks, do you know what your normal pH should be?

In my continuing quest to know more about the skin and how to achieve the perfect face, I decided to do some research on the skin's pH levels*. 'Skin pH' is a term chemists use meaning "Potential of Hydrogen" and is used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of the skin.

In most cases skin problems are a direct result of a pH imbalance in the skins acid mantle, a thin protective layer of sweat and sebum (oil) that sits on the outer layer of the skin. The skins pH is measured on a scale which ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral meaning it's neither acid or alkaline. Any reading below 7 indicates your skin is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. This acid mantle helps protect the skin from foreign bacteria and fungi, sun and wind and other environmental conditions and also helps to protect against dehydration. Normal skin pH varies from one part of the body to another, but generally ranges from 4.2 to 5.6, making it somewhat acidic; a man's skins tends to be more acidic than a woman's.

Here are a few Spa Girl tips which will help protect your skin as you age: use the right cleanser and moisturizer, drink the correct amount of water and have lukewarm, five-minute showers.

Using the right cleanser will help maintain a normal pH level and a cleanser that is lipid-free will protect the skin's barrier functionality. If you use a cleanser that stings, it is most likely to acidic for your skin type.

You can also help sustain a good pH level by adding back moisture. As we age, oil production tappers off which affects the acid mantle. By using a good moisturizer, or oil if your skin is really dry, will assist in maintaining a protective barrier. Spa Girl Tip: I use a Vitamin C oil and a moisturizer with Vitamin K.

Drinking the correct amount of water will be a big help not only for your skin, but your entire body. Water is naturally alkaline and adding lemons and limes which are a great source of antioxidants is ideal and will help create a more alkaline environment internally! Spa Girl tip: don't drink sugar which increases glycation ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycation).

And last but not least, protect your skin by taking tepid, five minutes showers as the acid mantle is the most ideal protector and water can loosen the skin`s outer layers and make them more vulnerable to damage and dehydration. Hot or cold water on the face can also result in broken capillaries.

* An adequate pH value is essential for a healthy skin. It can be measured with the Skin-pH-Meter

Spa Girls most perfect face

Over the years I have tried countless skin care products all boasting they are the solution to the perfect face and since creating Spa Girl I have read, researched and written about a number of these products and their ingredients. I have learned so much about the various different formulas, and chimed in on the debate about organic vs. non-organic, natural vs. synthetic, you name it.

For the last four weeks I have been testing some great products for the perfect face and I have to say I love them. My skin feels cleaner than ever and is butter soft and smooth.

These skin care products are developed by Cosmetic Solutions, a member of the Natural Products Association, a company who develops private label brands for medical professionals and aesthetic skincare businesses world-wide. These CSI products are designed specifically to emulate the skin's natural functionality, with active therapeutic ingredients for all skin types.

I'm going to highlight these products over the next few blogs and as you will see, in only a few simple steps you too can attain the perfect face.

In my last blog I talked about the importance of knowing your skin type when selecting the perfect product for your face. Then it's all about your cleanser.

You need to find a great cleanser that works well with your skin type and stick with it. Any product that is from natural ingredients will be the best. If you get stuck, ask the experts at your Spa. And remember, expensive does not necessarily mean it is the best!

While it is a matter of personal choice, and skin type, most experts say you should wash your face once a day, at night, as cleansing too often can dry out your skin, and as you get older the body produces less oil. In the morning simply splash your face with warm water and pat dry prior to applying your moisturizer and sunscreen. Never use hot or cold water as this can cause the capillaries to break.

Exfoliation should also be a part of your cleansing program. This helps to remove dead skin cells from the epidermis. If you have really dry or sensitive skin, you may want to avoid exfoliation at home altogether as it could do more harm than good. There are several ways to exfoliate skin: facial scrubs, Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids which also help generate collagen; again best to ask your Spa expert on the best way to consider exfoliation for your skin type.

Spa Girl Tip: Water helps to not only remove impurities from the skin, it hydrates to keep the skin looking plump and smooth. To keep the skin hydrated, you should drink plenty of water each day--check out my blog on the benefits of water and how much you should be consuming! Some interesting new studies indicate you should be eating your water! Lots of fruits and vegetables.

I am not a big fan of using a toner after I wash, if you are using a good cleanser and washing for at least 30 seconds in slow circular motions, this should be enough to remove all traces of oil, makeup and dirt from your face. Toners are really a matter of personal choice.

The cleanser that has Spa Girl glowing is called Rose Hip Seed Cleanser, a gentle but powerful cleanser enriched with a combination of Rose Hip Seed Oil, Olive Oil Castile, Seaweed, and Oil of Kumquat. This cleanser provides a complete spectrum of skin nourishment and protection every time you cleanse and your skin is definitely left feeling fresh and radiant. This fabulous cleanser provides a thorough cleansing and removes all traces of makeup and other airborne impurities that accumulate throughout the day. And it is easy to use, just wet your face with warm water, lather a small amount of Rose Hip Seed Cleanser in your hand and massage into your face in circular motions for at least 30 seconds. As with any cleansers avoid the eye area, then rinse with warm water and pat dry with (preferably linen) a towel.

Spa Girl is so impressed with this cleanser and these skin care products I am considering creating my own Spa Girl line of products for the perfect face! Stay tuned.

Spa Girl says, Once you know the basics, taking care of your face is simple and will make you feel and look great...

It is hard to imagine that something so simple as washing your face can go so wrong. Like most women I want my face to look great, so after talking to my Spa specialist I decided to do a little research on the easiest and best ways to take care of your face.

Over the last five years I have literally reversed the condition of the skin on my face, it is now younger looking, more supple, less wrinkles and much healthier and I couldn't be more happy. On my last visit to the Spa I asked, 'how old does the skin on face look', and she indicated 30 something. For someone in their 50's I was pretty pleased.

So how did it do it?

Proper care for your skin is all about your skin type, how you cleanse, the products you use and sunscreen. And for me going to the Spa for a regular facial. However a good home facial is inexpensive and equally rewarding to having a great looking face!

It is important to know what type of skin you have before putting your regime into place--then it is a simply process. Make sure to ask which skin type you are on your next Spa visit. There are five basic skin types: oily, combination, sensitive, dry and sun-damaged. Your skin type is determined by how much, or how little oil your skin produces. Genes, diet, stress, medication and your skincare regimen all determine how much oil your skin produces.

Rona Berg, former beauty editor of The New York Times Magazine, and editor-in-chief of a stylish new national magazine called Organic Beauty (http://www.greenmuze.com/green-your/body/733-organic-beauty-magazine-.html) details in her book, "Beauty the New Basics," the five different skin types. Here's how to tell what skin type you have.
Type 1: Oily skin tends to shiny with enlarged pores, and is prone to blackheads and blemishes. You might experience some tightness.

Type 2: Combination/normal This skin type has medium pores, a smooth and even texture, good circulation, healthy color, may tend toward dryness on the cheeks while being oily in the t-zone.

Type 3: Sensitive skin tends to be thin, delicate with fine pores. It flushes easily, is prone to broken capillaries, is frequently allergic and can be rashy.

Type 4: Dry skin feels tight, especially after cleansing. You have a tendency towards fine wrinkles, flaking and red patches. In women of color, skin may appear ashy or dull from dead skin build-up.

Type 5: Aging or sun-damaged This skin also feels tight with visible wrinkles, slack skin tone -- especially around the cheeks and jaw line -- with leathery texture and broken capillaries.
Spa Girls simple steps to a great looking face...
Step One: Cleansing
You need to find a great cleanser that works well with your skin type and stick with it. I have been searching for years and there are so many choices available. Check out my earlier blogs on what's in your skin care products and make sure to select one that is organic or free from synthetic additives. Any product that is from natural ingredients will be the best. If you get stuck, ask the experts at your Spa. And remember, expensive does not necessarily mean it is the best!

While it is tempting, make sure to never use bar soaps on your face as they can be harsh and tend to dry out the skin. Soap is for the neck down, unless like me, you prefer Irish sea weed based products (check out my blog on Seavite). Spa Girl Tip: creamy, alcohol-free cleansers are generally better for dry, sensitive skin while clear cleansers are ideal for oily skin. Wash your face only at night, cleansing too often can dry out your skin, especially as you get older as there is less oil being produced. In the morning a simple splash with warm water and pat dry will work prior to applying your moisturizer and sunscreen. Never use hot or cold water as this can cause the capillaries to break.

I also exfoliate to remove dead skin cells from the epidermis once every week or two. This leaves my skin feeling smoother and looking brighter. If you have really dry or sensitive skin, you may want to avoid exfoliation at home altogether as it could do more harm than good. There are several ways to exfoliate skin: facial scrubs with tiny grains to avoid tearing the skin, Microdermabrasion, chemical peels and retinoids which also help generate collagen; again best to ask your Spa expert on the best way to consider exfoliation for your skin type.

Lots of fruits and vegtables.

I am not a big fan of using a toner after I wash, if you are using a good cleanser and washing for at least 30 seconds in slow circular motions, this should be enough to remove all traces of oil, makeup and dirt from your face. Toners are really a matter of personal choice.

Step 2: Moisturize

Your skin requires essential fatty acids, an important component of a healthy diet as they help to build lipid-based cell membranes that retain water and nutrients and form an oil barrier that protects the skin from pollutants and UV. So make sure you are getting your Omega-3's and Omega-6's as they are the best way to improve your complexion from the inside out!

Moisturizers are more complex and some experts have suggested they should be avoided altogether. Having a tendency for dry, sensitive skin, I definitely like to use a moisturiser and I also use in addition to my moisturizer, Vitamin C oil, a great antioxidant which helps to build collagen. Same rules apply as cleaners, make sure whatever product you select works for your skin type and is preferably organic and free from synthetic additives. If you are using a great product, you most likely will not require additional eye creams.

Step 3: Sunscreen

Sunscreen is the most important part of your skincare regimen! The number-1 cause of wrinkles and skin that looks tired, dull and aged is sun damage. So use a good sunscreen (in the morning) all year round with at least a sun-protection factor of (SPF) 15. To keep your face happy, don't use sunscreen products at night, they are not meant to be used 24/7.

Once you know the basics, taking care of your face is simple and will make you feel and look great!

Spa Girl bids farewell to 2010 and welcomes in a New Year

Dedicated to Dr. Shirley Thompson--Champion of the Arts

As I reflect on the past 12 months and wrap up 2010 I want to say this year has been incredible.  It has been full of renewals, adventures, good friends, great food, amazing spa experiences, challenging opportunities and the daily highs and lows of a busy life.

I cherish and sorely miss my dear friends and colleagues who have left us and continue to support in whatever manor I can, those in need.

With so many things to celebrate this past year, one of my most favourite activities has been writing this Spa Girl blog and watching as Spa Girl fans increase in numbers on facebook. I have learned so much more about health and wellness from all the research I've done, and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing this knowledge and hearing from you!

Spa Girl began with no specific long-term expectations.  Rather it was a  wonderful way to learn about blogging and explore, write and contribute to something I love to do--pamper a busy lifestyle! Women especially seem to take care of so many others and often forget to look after themselves--I have surely been guilty of this and Spa Girl has helped, at least for me and I hope others, remember to take the time to take care of my own wellbeing.

The Spa experience is one of many adventures in self discovery.  History tells us that we are not alone, from the very beginning of time people have enjoyed the restorative powers and therapeutic effects of healing waters; so as we celebrate the start of another year, remember Spa Girls motto: Relax, Rejuvenate, and Restore!

Happy New Year everyone!

Spa Girl had an amazing Facial

The best way I could think of celebrating the finale of an incredible year was to head back to Sparkling Hill Resort and Wellness Spa for a two day couples get-away. It is divine to have such an exquisite spa so close to home, not to mention located in the spectacular countryside, dotted with lakes and vineyards and punctuated by stunning mountains of Vernon, British Columbia.

Sparkling Hill celebrates whole body health and wellness inside and out. It offers over 100 of some of the best traditional European and transformative spa treatments to restore and revitalize the entire body--so watch out for many more blogs from this heavenly spa. Lead by sensitive professionals who embrace a holistic approach to health and wellness, Sparkling Hill aims to personalize your specific needs and enhance your overall well-being. Once again I left this magnificent resort feeling relaxed, cleansed and with an new sense of vigour!

This time along with a side-by-side couples massage, I enjoyed an amazing facial, while my husband had his first pedicure. He is a runner with runners feet, and his feet have never looked better. I must say, he is a trooper, I once talked him into climbing into an old fashion steam box before diving into a sea weed bath in Ireland, next it will be a facial!

I opted for the Vitamin Enriched Hydra Facial (75 minutes / $155) which is finely tuned with antioxidants providing deep moisturizing benefits which are great for repairing damaged dry skin. While I generally keep out of the sun, my skin is prone to be dry from the arid climate I live in, so this treatment was ideal. The first 15+ minutes of the session was cleansing my face and removing impurities with several wonderful smelling products including a gentle but powerful cleanser enriched with a combination of Rose Hip Seed Oil, Olive Oil Castile, Seaweed, and Oil of Kumquat, all under a temperate plume of steam. Hot towels and free-radical fighting agents of Vitamin C, CoQ10, Red Tea and Vitamin E followed. As usual, I was so relaxed I fell asleep several times and when I left the treatment room I was definitely in a world all of my own, and my face felt fabulous, it was brighter, and had the texture of warm soft butter. Several days later it is still soft and supple--this might be the best facial I have ever had!

Sparkling Hill’s KurSpa endorses the Professional Solutions® line of products (formulated, tested and made exclusively for Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists, Medi-Spas and Professional Medical Skin Care Dispensers) around the world. Spa Girl checks out Spa Pure

Always interested in trying out a new spa adventure, I checked out Spa Pure, now located in four cities--Langley, Kelowna, Pitt Meadows and the newly opened location in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The brain child of two thirty-some year old sisters, Spa Pure is all about bringing the spa experience to everyone.

As they say...

Spa Pure is a new concept spa with the hope of being able to allow every single person to enjoy and relax in a beautiful and luxurious spa atmosphere. The Spa Pure prices are based on what the average income person can afford on a regular basis. We believe that the relaxation which is achieved at Spa Pure promotes a healthier way of life, and that no one should be deprived of good health and wellness.

I of course enjoy my typical combo of a 90 minute relaxation massage and hour long facial and decided, at the last minute, to also have my legs waxed, which cost in total (with tax) $140. Indeed a very good price!

Several of the certified estheticians who work at this Spa Pure location were recent graduates from a local school and are very capable.

The Spa was clean and comfortable and their products were organic, however I would not say it was "luxurious". The treatment rooms and relaxation room were on the small side and the spa did not have all the amenities I like in a Spa such as the water features, steam, baths and Vichy Shower. I asked the esthetician about tool sterilization and she said it was excellent.

I think for those looking for an affordable spa treatment in a comfortable simple environment, Spa Pure is ideal.

Spa Girl ponders the perfect Gift

As the clock ticks down to the holiday season it is always fun to put together the perfect gift for that special friend. Well I have just the ideal present. It's a Spa Basket full of goodies to pamper yourself from head to toe!

Throughout this past year I have posted several do-it-yourself spa goodies to treat yourself at home.

In celebration of my second Christmas as Spa Girl I am going to give a Spa Basket to the 200th person to join Spa Girl before December 25th on facebook or my Spa Girl blog site. And if you were the Spa Girl to suggest they join, you will get a basket as well.

So tell your friends about Spa Girl and help spread the word and in the meantime, make sure to pamper yourself!

Spa Girl spurges on LAMER

It is icy cold and in weather like this your face and lips take a beating. So I splurged and purchased one of the best lip balms and face creams on the market--LAMER.

And its everything it says it is!

LAMER has a very interesting history. It was invented by Dr. Max Huber, an aerospace physicist who suffered severe chemical burns in a lab accident. Taking over twelve years to develop the formulation to alleviate his condition LAMER consists of sea kelp high in anti-microbial properties and the nutrients calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and lecithin; vitamins C, E and B-12; and oils of eucalyptus, sunflower, wheat germ, alfalfa and citrus.

I have been using La Mer Lip Balm  for a week and my lips have never been so soft and supple. LAMER offers a number of product lines for the face and body.

Check out their website for more information.

Spa Girl says it is that time of the Year!

As the winter starts to gain control it is time to think about your lips!

There is nothing worse than chapped, sore lips, it really dampens interest in kissing just at the time of year when there is nothing better than to curl up in front of the fire with your sweetie.

Moisturizing your skin in winter is essential-especially for those sensitive and exposed areas of the face. Both cold weather and summer sun are not ideal for our lips, as they can become chapped and cracked.

To help remedy these conditions there are some great easy-to-make recipes than include the natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits of honey. The first is a great exfoliator, then a remarkable Lip Balm.

LIP EXFOLIATOR
  • ½ tsp. granulated sugar
  • 1 drop honey
Combine sugar and honey and rub the blend onto your lips for 20 seconds using light, circular motions and gently rince with warm water and pat dry.

LIP BALM
  • 2 tsp. almond oil
  • 1 tsp. honey
  • 1 tsp. beeswax pellets
  • 1 vitamin E capsule
Combine almond oil, honey, beeswax, and vitamin E capsule liquid in a small pan. Stir over low heat until beeswax melts. Pour into a small container, once soidified, use often.

Enjoy the winter Spa Girls and remember to go to the Spa.

Happy Halloween Spa Girls....

Spa Girl says Happy Halloween

It's that time of year, where witches and goblins come out to play, it's Halloween, or in Mexico, Day of the Dead. If you have never witnessed this Mexican holiday, it is definitely worth the trip.

Halloween is a mix of ancient Celtic practices, Catholic and Roman religious rituals and European folk traditions that blended together over time to create the holiday we know today. Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity and life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween has long been thought of as a day when the dead can return to the earth... In the 19th century, Halloween began to lose its religious connotation, becoming a more secular community-based children's holiday. Halloween, one of the world's oldest holidays, is still celebrated today in several countries around the globe.

http://www.history.com/topics/halloween

In recognition of Halloween many spas have created pumpkin-based treatments. Pumpkins are rich in natural plant enzymes and carotenoid antioxidants that help to repair, exfoliate, and hydrate dull skin. Add a little cinnamon (sounds like a pumpkin pie) which stimulates circulation and helps firm and polish the skin, you have the perfect face mask.Spas in Bali, Hawaii, Tahiti and other such exotic get-always often mash fresh fruit into their facials, a tradition I'm happy to say is starting to happen more often elsewhere, which leave your face fresh and glowing.

Here's one to try this Halloween...

2/3 cup fresh papaya, mashed
15 oz. can pure pumpkin
1 egg, beaten

Beat until frothy an organic egg and combine with mashed papaya, then add pumpkin. This can be done by hand or in a blender. Apply to a clean face being careful to avoid the eyes. You most likely will feel a tingling sensation as the enzymes in the pumpkin begin to work. Leave the mask on for about 10 minutes, then rinse off with warm water, pat dry and apply your favourite organic tonner and moisturizer.

Trick or Treat...Happy Halloween Spa Girls!

Spa Girl's visit to Sparkling Hill Resort & Spa

Thanksgiving, whether you celebrate it in October or November is a time to give thanks for the bounty of the fall harvest and express our gratitude for all we hold dear. It is also one of my favourite holidays as I just love the fall.

This year I decided to celebrate by heading with a friend to the newly opened Sparkling Hill Resort & Spa located in the stunning landscape of the interior of British Columbia, just outside Vernon. Not only is this wine country, it is dotted with hundreds of amazing lakes, rolling valleys and spectacular mountain vistas.

If you saw the film "My American Cousin", traveling to Sparkling Hill will bring to life all that unforgettable scenery--and there is nothing like the real thing!

Named after the sun drenched mountain it sits atop of, this resort is the perfect blend of Canadian and Austrian elegance. Built as an international destination for extended wellness holidays and designed by Canadian architects this $122-million resort was funded by Gernot Langes-Swarovski, the patriarch of the Swarovski crystal empire.

And crystals you get, every aspect of this facility is infused with crystals from the breathtaking iridescence of the sculptural lighting in the four storey open lobby and dining room, with their panoramic views, to crystal fireplaces in each room, crystal encrusted washroom signs, imbedded in the backs of chairs and cupboard doors and sculptures throughout, this place hums with energy and magical prisms.

And then there is the Spa!

Sparkling Hill KurSpa is a expansive 40,000 square foot European inspired wellness centre designed after Spa Girls motto, relax, rejuvenate, and restore! In their own words, KurSpa "is a place of calm and tranquillity; where a distinctive sense of time and place pervades in the character and quality of the spaces".

In addition to a myriad of treatment options guests have the luxury of indulging in seven unique aromatherapy sauna and steam rooms, an indoor salt water pool with underwater music and a starry Swarovski crystal ceiling, a hot pool, outdoor infinity pool, a Kneipp waterway, state-of-the art fitness studio, tea room and Serenity Room.

KurSpa services, when fully staffed, are offered by physicians, physiotherapists, massage therapists and trained estheticians. I opted to have four treatments starting with a Fango (Italian for mud) wrap consisting of pure volcanic ash and warm water mixed into a buttery mud which detoxifies and invigorates the muscles. A perfect appetizer prior to the KurSpa massage. My second day I enjoyed the elegance of the beauty section at KurSpa with a facial and pedicure. I had considered trying KurSpa's famous Cold Sauna (-110 degree C) popular in Europe and the first in North America, but it was out of order. This treatment known as cryotheraphy involves spending up to three minutes in this icy chamber (feet, hands, ears and mouth are protected) and purports to help improve circulation, alleviate pain, improve joint and muscle function, reduce skin irritation and leave you feeling refreshed (no kidding) and energized!

After two days at Sparkling Hill I felt like I had spent a week relaxing and re-energizing, indulging in fine dining and treating all my senses.

This remarkable Canadian destination was the dream of Hans-Peter Mayr the resorts President and CEO whom we had a chance to meet on the day we left. Mayr is determined to make this resort known for its quality and outstanding service echoing inside the breathtaking beauty of the Monashee Mountains and Lake Okanagan which encircle Sparkling Hill Resort and Spa.

It is impossible to describe in one blog all that this amazing resort has to offer, so check out their website.

Spa Girl is off to enjoy a Thanksgiving Get-Away!

Well I have been waiting for this for months.  A good friend is join me and we are off to the new Sparkling Hill Resort in Vernon, British Columbia for Thanksgiving weekend; we booked this weekend get-away just after this amazaing new resort and spa opened its doors.  Mud wrap, massage, salt steam, facial and swimming in their healing pools--and I will tell you all about it when I return.
Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian Spa Girls!

Sparkling Hill Resort

"It is here that you will discover a modern oasis—a most remarkable hotel and wellness centre with European-inspired design elegance. “Unique” doesn’t come close to describing the experience awaiting you at Sparkling Hill Resort—the first resort in North America to incorporate Swarovski crystal elements into every aspect of its design. The mood is set from the moment you enter—an iridescence from crystals infused everywhere; in waterfalls, fireplaces and overhead lighting, providing a luminous luxury that is palpable. Bold prisms throughout subtly create a feeling of warmth and serenity. It’s all part of Sparkling Hill Resort’s outstanding master design."

Spa Girl checks out the benefits of Walking

For some of us exercise does not come easily. Tired when we get home from a busy day--I would rather head to the spa--the last thing you feel like doing is lacing on the runners and going for a walk. But the extraordinary benefits of walking are worth pushing just that little further. And walking is one of the healthiest forms of exercise. So I say, walk to the Spa!

Walking is a simple and easy way to improve your overall wellbeing and reduce the chances of developing health concerns associated with inactivity such as obesity, coronary heart disease, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease. Walking will reduce your blood pressure, improve your cardiovascular functions and as a low impact activity, it's gentle on the joints. But the benefits don't stop there, walking is also credited for helping to reduce high cholesterol, reducing body fat, enhancing mental wellbeing, increasing bone density, reducing the risk of cancer, helping to control body weight and helping to increase flexibility and co-ordination. Pretty impressive!

Many cities, eager to help improve the health and welfare of their residents offer great walking programs and have published books highlighting local hiking trails from easy to extreme. Just go to your cities website and check it out.

The Surgeon General recommends 30 minutes or more of accumulated moderate intensity physical activity on five or more days per week to improve health and fitness. "Accumulated" means you can do it in shorter bouts throughout the day (for example, 10- or 15-minute intervals throughout the day), and "moderate intensity" means you feel warm and slightly out of breath when you do it.
There are many great ways to get started. Ask a friend to walk with you, get off the bus and walk that additional block or two, or better yet, ride your bike to work. Park your car at the bottom of the parking lot and walk that extra wee bit, and keep your walking shoes handy for that quick ten minute walk around the block for a nice break from your computer.

Spa Girl finds happiness in a Pumpkin Soufflé

Pomegranates, plums and yes pumpkins—it’s that time of year! Delicious to eat and great for your skin, these seasonal goodies help relax and rejuvenate as we slide, perhaps reluctantly, into fall.

Pumpkins are a rich source of nutrients and antioxidants like vitamin C, E, and A, potassium, alpha-carotene, zinc, beta carotene, and lutein. From facials to revitalizing body wraps, pumpkin and other seasonal ingredients are now being incorporated into a variety of decadent treatments at your favourite Spa.

Pumpkin makes an excellent face mask for all skin types as it soothes, moisturizes and promotes that healthy glow.

Pumpkin Soufflé for your Face

Here’s what you’ll need… ½ Apple, 1 small slice of pumpkin, 1 TBSP honey, 1 to 2 TBSP half & half and 1 to 2 TBSP oatmeal.

Wash, peel, core, and chop up the apple and pumpkin and blend adding honey, half and half and oatmeal. Puree until you achive a rich, thick consistency. Apply to your face for 10 to 15 minutes then rinse with warm water and pat dry. Apply your favourite moisturizer.

Spa Girl Discovered her Dosha

It is always interesting to see what others have to say about their favourite spa experiences, and which in fact are the most preferred. Travel + Leisure's 2010 World's Best Destination Spas was a great opportunity to scan the globe for those amazing get-aways and while doing so, I discover my Dosha.

A dosha is one of three bodily humors that make up one's constitution according to Ayurveda. These teachings are also known as the Tridosha system.

The central concept of Ayurvedic medicine is the theory that health exists when there is a balance between three fundamental bodily humours or doshas called Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

• Vāta or Vāyu (wind) is the impulse principle necessary to mobilize the function of the nervous system. It affects the windy humour, flatulence, gout, rheumatism, etc.

• Pitta (bile) is the bilious humour, or that secreted between the stomach and bowels and flowing through the liver and permeating spleen, heart, eyes, and skin; its chief quality is heat. It is the energy principle which uses bile to direct digestion and hence metabolism into the venous system.

• Kapha (phlegm) is the body fluid principle which relates to mucous, lubrication and the carrier of nutrients into the arterial system.

All Ayurvedic physicians believe that these ancient ideas, based in the knowledge discovered by the Rishis and Munis, exist in harmony with physical reality. These Ayurvedic concepts allow physicians to examine the homeostasis of the whole system. People may be of a predominant dosha or constitution, but all doshas have the basic elements within them.

To find out your dosha, take the dosha quiz. http://doshaquiz.chopra.com/
One of the top ten listed Spa’s is The Chopra Center for Wellbeing, in Carlsbad, California. The Chopra Center's philosophy to overall health and wellbeing is the synthesis of the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with the most advanced developments in modern allopathic medicine. Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing that has its origins in the Vedic culture of India and means “The Science of Life”. It is a traditional modality emphasizing prevention of disease, rejuvenation of the body systems and extension of one’s life span. It is grounded in the metaphysics of earth, water, fire, air and ether and stresses the balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Deepak Chopra, M.D., a world-renowned authority in the field of mind-body healing, and David Simon, M.D. opened the Chopra Center for Wellbeing in 1996 “to help people experience physical healing, emotional freedom, and higher states of consciousness”. The Center offers some amazing Spa experiences http://www.chopra.com/spa/treatments such as the Odyssey Ayurvedic Massage Treatment, Gandharva Therapy, Shirodhara or the Oshadhi Treatment.

Here is what they have to say…

Although suppressed during years of foreign occupation, Ayurveda has been enjoying a major resurgence in both its native land and throughout the world. Tibetan medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine both have their roots in Ayurveda. Early Greek medicine also embraced many concepts originally described in the classical ayurvedic medical texts dating back thousands of years.

More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge). It offers a body of wisdom designed to help people stay vital while realizing their full human potential. Providing guidelines on ideal daily and seasonal routines, diet, behavior and the proper use of our senses, Ayurveda reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit.

An important goal of Ayurveda is to identify a person’s ideal state of balance, determine where they are out of balance, and offer interventions using diet, herbs, aromatherapy, massage treatments, music, and meditation to reestablish balance.
