Spa Girls Interview with Thomas Cook Travel

Spa Girl 'virtually' sat down with Ginny Cumming, Editor, Thomas Cook Travel to discuss a special spa feature for an issue of Thomas Cook Travel.  This handsome quarterly magazine is distributed onboard Thomas Cook flights, and has a readership of 2.25 million every issue.

Spa blogging is something I do in my 'spare' time and  writing for such a well know magazine was a great experience.  Being one of seven bloggers to be featured in Thomas Cook Travel was truly a pleasure...

GC--What is your name?

Jann LM Bailey

GC--And the name of your blog/website (and URL)?

Spa Girl

GC--When and why did you start your blog/website?

A relative newcomer to blogging, I created  SPA GIRL blog in 2009 because I wanted to share my spa experiences. Spa Girl began with no specific long-term expectations, rather it was a  wonderful way to learn about blogging and explore, write and contribute to something I love to do--pamper a very busy lifestyle!

Women especially seem to take care of so many others and often forget to look after themselves--I have surely been guilty of this and Spa Girl has helped--at  least for me and I hope others--remember to take the time to take care of my own wellbeing.

I am a big fan of aromatherapy, thalassotherapy, spa cuisine and history. I love to pamper myself, inside and out! And why not? I work hard, travel a lot and find the spa experience exciting each and every time.

One of my most favourite activities has been writing this Spa Girl blog. I have learned so much about health and wellness from all the research I've done, and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing this knowledge and hearing from others!

The Spa experience is one of many adventures in self discovery.  History tells us that we are not alone, from the very beginning of time people have enjoyed the restorative powers and therapeutic effects of healing waters. Today the Spa experience has expanded to include so many ways to live a happy, healthy, holistic lifestyle.

Relax, rejuvenate, and restore: that’s Spa Girl's motto.

For information on thalassotherapy go to:

GC--What do you cover?

Spa Girl covers a number of interests including: aromatherapy, home spa treatments, spa modalities, feel good tips, spa destinations, spa cuisine and natural/organic products.

Spa Girl is also on facebook where in addition to my blogs, I post links to other spa writers and stories, spa reviews and tips.

I have studied aromatherapy for a number of years and create my own salt scrubs, bath oils, soaps and skin creams.  I often post recipes for spa products (from cupboard to face) and good eats related to my blog posts.

I am an avid researcher and love to research all aspects of the spa industry, study and of course try every spa experience there is.

My other passion is art museums.

GC--Do you visit all the spas yourself, or do you have a team of reviewers? (and if so, please advise how many etc)

I visit all the spas myself.

GC--What is the best piece of advice you could offer to fellow spa lovers when they visit a spa or resort for the first time?

I have visited Spas all over the world and the one thing that I insist on is a hygienically safe environment.
Most people make the assumption that in the Spa business they know how to maintain a safe, sanitary environment.  But it never hurts to double check, after all, it is your wellbeing you are putting into the hands of others.
The best way to assure yourself that the Spa you are visiting is 'taking care of business' is to politely ask to have a tour and ask a few questions along the way.

What to look for and what to ask...

·                Ask how they disinfect the equipment and hydrotherapy tubs and ask to see their sterilization room.
·                Ask to see a treatment room and make sure it is squeaky clean and check out the drain in the wet room.  No wanted hair here!
·                Make sure nail files are for one time use only, or disinfected between clients and that the ropes and slippers are being cleaned after each use.
·                Absolutely NO double dipping of anything!

Once you have satisfied yourself that the Spa you are booking into meets your ‘clean index’ you can truly take Spa Girls motto to heart: Relax, Rejuvenate & Restore!

GC--If you could only have one treatment for the rest of your life, what would it be? (ie what is your favourite?)

That's a hard one, I love so many different modalities!  My two spa staples are massage (deep tissue) and a facial, although I just love a salt scrub and Visy shower. So if I have to pick just one,   I would have to say a massage, as it is a whole body treatment.

GC--What (and where) is the one spa you’ve always wanted to visit, but have yet to experience?

I have so many Spas on my 'yet to experience' list...here are my top 3!

1.        Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

"Arrive in style in a seaplane over the lagoon, dine in the world's first all-glass, undersea restaurant and indulge in luxurious spa therapies. Sited in a picturesque corner of the Maldives, this luxury resort is spread across two islands, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef and lagoon. Twice voted 'Best Hotel in the World' and several times 'Best Resort', the hotel boasts 50 luxurious water villas, 79 exotic beach villas and 21 fabulous spa water villas with private treatment rooms."

2.       The St. Regis Resort Bora Bora

"The St. Regis Bora Bora, a 44-acre property and winner of Best Resort Worldwide by Travel Weekly magazine, offers luxurious accommodations combined with St. Regis' personalized services and amenities, including 24-hour concierge and room service, and the St. Regis Butler Service. The resort's spa, Spa Miri Miri, is located on its own private island and offers seven treatment rooms and a wide range of invigorating and innovative treatments. The resort has three restaurants including Lagoon, the resort's signature over-water restaurant and winner of Wine Spectator magazine’s award for excellence in 2008 and 2009."

3.       Banyan Tree, Phuket, Thailand

" An island paradise of daydream material and perfect moments, Phuket offers fine beaches, turquoise seas and warm sunny weather. This is a destination that showcases the island’s extraordinary beauty in a setting of award-winning architecture, built in harmony with nature.

Indulge in a range of treatments at the renowned Banyan Tree Spa, savour the best of local and international cuisine as prepared by master chefs, or venture out to explore Phuket.

Banyan Tree Phuket is the destination you have always dreamed of and one that you will never forget.
The ultimate luxury here has to be a stay in the spa pool villa with its elegant 'floating bed' pavilion amid tranquil lily ponds. Many rooms come with a dedicated 'in-villa spa'. "

GC--What is the weirdest/most outrageous/most expensive treatment you've ever had?

Nothing is to weird or outrageous for Spa Girl...bring it on!

Spa Girl says Proof (SpaEvidence.com) is in the Pudding!

don't need to convince Spa Girl fans or anyone who regularly goes to the spa, that it simply makes you feel better. As my motto states:  relax, rejuvenate and restore!

Now there is a website which provides substantiation that spa and wellness related modalities like massage, meditation, acupuncture and fitness have powerful, proven health benefits.  Evidence which states--for example--that a 45-minute massage decreases stress hormones and boosts the immune system.

Hundreds of million people around the globe use alternative practices to either maintain or improve their health and now thanks to several forward thinking individuals in the medical and spa fields you can access this first-ever evidence-based research.   This is very exciting!

Discussion around the need for such a resource was introduced by Dr. Kenneth Pelletier, a renowned expert in Integrative Medicine at the 2010 Global Spa Summit and it grew from there.  This remarkable portal provides access for professionals and non-professionals alike to scrutinize medical evidence that exists for spa and wellness related therapies.  Literally thousands of hard science studies that evaluate and discuss the benefits of many spa treatments.

Congratulations to the founders of this new portal, one I know I will use on a regular basis!  www.spaevidence.com

Spa Girl says protect your lips with this ubiquitous vegetable that hydrates, cools, and heals!

Winter showed its chilly disposition this week plunging temperatures into the minuses.   This time of year everyone needs to be proactive and prevent chapped lips.  One of the best ways of soothing this tender tissue is to reach for a slice of cucumber!

This ubiquitous vegetable hydrates, cools and sooths when applied to your lips and eyes or grated for an exquisite mask and tonic for the entire face.

Belonging to the same family as pumpkin, zucchini, watermelon and squash, cucumbers are rich in  natural salts, enzymes, vitamins and minerals which are essential for the repair and development of cells.  They are also powerful antioxidants and because of their high water content, great for helping to flush the system;  the alkalinity of cucumbers make them a top choice as a diuretic.

Found in most spas (in addition to teas) cucumber water is one of my favourite beverages in-between treatments.

So when the thermometer dips and your lips need some tender loving care, slice up some cucumber, and hold it to your lips for several minutes and it will help with the irritation and dryness that comes with this seasonal change.  I also love to apply (after I use the cucumbers) organic coconut oil which has rich emollient properties, it helps retain the moisture generated from the cucumber.

Spa Girl also advocates drinking at least two to three litres of water a day to avoid dehydration, this is especially important in the winter!

Spa Girl says get healthy stay healthy with Skin Brushing

I love a good salt scrub, not only does it exfoliate your entire body it helps stimulate blood and lymph flow.  Followed by a relaxing Vichy shower this it is one of my favourite spa treatments.

In between Spa visits I routinely dry brush my skin which provides the same important benefits.  Skin brushing helps to improve your skin by removing dead cells and stimulates the regeneration of new skin, it also encourages blood circulation, improves lymphatic flow and greatly enhances elimination of toxins.  And when you thought there was no hope of getting rid of cellulite, skin brushing will help with that as well!

The skin is the largest organ in our bodies, and helps to remove up to 2 pounds of waste each day; as a daily routine, skin brushing is one of the most important detox activities you can add to your 'get healthy stay healthy' regime.

The Benefits Of Dry Skin Brushing

• Dry skin brushing helps to shed dead skin cells, which can help improve skin texture and cell renewal.
• Dry skin brushing increases circulation to skin, encouraging your body’s discharge of metabolic wastes, which greatly aids the lymphatic drainage of the entire body. When the body rids itself of toxins, it is able to run more efficiently in all areas.
• Dry skin brushing also helps to tighten the skin because it increases the flow of blood. Increasing the circulation to the skin can also help lessen the appearance of cellulite.
• Dry skin brushing stimulates the lymph canals to drain toxic mucoid matter into the colon, thereby purifying the entire system. This enables the lymph to perform its house-cleaning duties by keeping the blood and other vital tissues detoxified. After several days of dry brushing, you may notice the gelatinous mucoid material in your stools.
• Dry skin brushing helps with muscle tone and more even distribution of fat deposits.
• Dry skin brushing also rejuvenates the nervous system by stimulating nerve endings in the skin.
• Dry skin brushing helps your skin to absorb nutrients by eliminating clogged pores. Healthy, breathing skin contributes to overall body health.
• Individuals who sit at a computer screen all day long will particularly take pleasure in the benefits of skin brushing. People who have inactive lifestyles or jobs usually experience stiff and sore necks and shoulders that reach even into their arms and down their spines and into their lower backs. Increased blood flow begins entering the areas brushed and you will experience an increase in electromagnetic energy that permits you to feel energized and invigorated.
• Cellulite is toxic materials that are accumulated in your body’s fat cells as they are unable to be eliminated. So, rather than liposuction surgery, how about utilizing the “dry skin brushing” techniques coupled with an alkaline diet program and a great exercising routine. It will break down the unwelcome toxic body deposits and send them scurrying out of your body through the elimination channels we discussed above.

So here is what you do...

Starting at the soles of your feet and work your way up your legs, then front (use a circular clock-wise motion on this part of your body) then the back, brushing vigorously as you go. Last the hands and arms always brushing in the direction of your heart.

Skin brushing is ideal first thing in the morning or before you take a shower.

Enjoy Spa Girls & Boys!

Spa Girl asks what are your Vitamin D levels?

For those of us living in the northern hemisphere where the weather continues to cool  and  sunlight is dwindling fast, it's time to increase or start taking Vitamin D.

Known as the sunshine vitamin, we produce Vitamin D naturally in the summer months when we are exposed to the sun light, however as winter rolls in our vitamin D levels drop and we become more susceptible to viruses.

The immune system's front-line defence are T-cells, which are latent until they are set in motion detecting and killing infections caused by viruses and bacteria. A Danish study recently found that the first stage of T-cell activation involves Vitamin D.  When a T-cell detects a virus or bacteria it sends out a signal to search for Vitamin D in the blood. Without Vitamin D, T-cell activation is jeopardised.

I have my Vitamin D levels checked two or three times a year with a simple blood test. It's an expensive test, so you might have to talk your Doctor into it! My Vitamin D level in my last test was 154, the normal range is between 75 and 200.  The first time I took a Vitamin D test, it was in the spring after a long, cold, dark winter, my level was 27!  It took me almost a year to build it to 100.

Why do we need vitamin D?

·       It is crucial for the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous, which have various functions, especially the maintenance of healthy bones.
·       It is an immune system regulator.
·       It may be an important way to arm the immune system against disorders like the common cold, say scientists from the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston.
·       It may reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is much less common the nearer you get to the tropics, where there is much more sunlight, according to Dennis Bourdette, chairman of the Department of Neurology and director of the Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Center at Oregon Health and Science University, USA.
·       Vitamin D may have a key role in helping the brain to keep working well in later life, according to a study of 3000 European men between the ages of 40 and 79.
·       Vitamin D is probably linked to maintaining a healthy body weight, according to research carried out at the Medical College of Georgia, USA.
·       It can reduce the severity and frequency of asthma symptoms, and also the likelihood of hospitalizations due to asthma, researchers from Harvard Medical School found after monitoring 616 children in Costa Rica.
·       It has been shown to reduce the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis in women.
·       A form of vitamin D could be one of our body's main protections against damage from low levels of radiation, say radiological experts from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
·       Various studies have shown that people with adequate levels of vitamin D have a significantly lower risk of developing cancer, compared to people with lower levels. Vitamin D deficiency was found to be prevalent in cancer patients regardless of nutritional status, in a study carried out by Cancer Treatment Centers of America.
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/161618.php

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, suggested in the March 2007 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine that taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily along with 10 to 15 minutes in the sun and a healthy diet could reduce the incidence of colorectal cancer by two-thirds. The same authors found that breast cancer rates were 50 per cent lower in people with high levels of vitamin D in their blood, and suggested that the average person could maintain those levels by taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily and spending 10 to 15 minutes in the sun.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2008/05/16/f-health-vitamin-d.html
Vitamin D has acquired its health-cult status because many studies have found that people with more of the nutrient circulating in their blood have lower rates of some cancers. As well, other research – based on epidemiology or the study of disease distribution in large populations – has found that there is more cancer, diabetes, and other chronic ailments among those living at northern latitudes than among people living further south.
